さらさら	小川など	bubble, murmur	When I was small, I used to lie on the grass listening to murmuring of a small stream nearby. 幼い頃、さらさらという小川のせせらぎを聞きながら草の上で寝そべって時を過ごしたものだ。
さらさら	乾燥	dry and smooth	The bed was clean with dry and smooth sheets. ベッドはさらさらのシーツが置いてあり、清潔だった。
さらさら	素材	rustling silk	He heard rustling noise and a woman in long white robe came into the room. さらさらという衣ずれの音がして白い長い衣をまとった女が部屋に入って来た。
さらさら	書く	quickly finish off	Calling himself a haiku poet, an old man quickly finished off a verse. 自分を俳人だと名乗る老人はさらさらと一句したためた。
さらさら	そよぐ	rustle	The leaves rustled in the wind. 風で木の葉がさらさらと音をたてている。
しとしと	雨	drizzle	It was one night of summer and it was drizzling when I saw a white blur image in the distance. それはある夏の夜のこと、雨がしとしと降っていた。私は遠くに白いぼんやりしたものを見たのだ。
じろじろ	見る	stare at	My mother used to tell me not to stare at people. 母によく人をじろじろ見るなと言われた。
じろっ	見る	glare at	When I laughed in a loud voice in the meeting, my boss glared at me. 会議中に大声で笑ったら上司にじろっとにらまれた。  Note   「じろっ」「ぎろっ」などのように睨む瞬間が短い場合には glare が使われ、「じろじろ」のように比較的瞬間が長い場合は stare というわけです。
ずきずき	痛む	throb	"I have a throbbing pain, and pills don't work at all." 「ずきずきした痛みで、薬も全然効かないんです。」
すくすく	成長	steadily	A baby grew steadily to become a beautiful woman. 赤ん坊はすくすくと成長し、美しい女性になった。
すごすご	逃げる	dispiritedly; crestfallen	When the smaller dog growled at the bigger one, the bigger ran dispiritedly (crestfallen). 小さいほうの犬がうなると大きいほうの犬はすごすごと逃げて行った。
すたすた	歩く	briskly	When he heard a knock, he walked briskly to the door. トントンという音がしたので彼はすたすたとドアまで歩いて行った。
ずたずた	破る	torn to shreds	The boss was furious about my wish of resignation and tore the paper to shreds in front of me. 上司は私の退職に対してかんかんで、目の前で退職願いをずたずたに破ってしまった。
すっかり	変化	changes completely	When he returned from the castle under the sea, the village had changed completely and there was nobody he knew. 彼が海底の城から戻ってみると、村はすっかり変わっていて知り合いも誰一人いなかった。
すっきり	明白な	clear	He knows things very well, but his explanation is not clear. 彼はものを良く知っているのだが、どうも説明がすっきりしない。
すっきり	さわやか	refreshed	After long hours of rest, I was refreshed. 何時間も休んだおかげですっきりした。
ずっしり	重い	heavily	The business goes hard, and all responsibilities are heavily placed on the shoulders of the president. 厳しい状況で、すべての責任がずっしりと社長の肩にかかっている。
すってんころりん	転倒	slip	He ran, but he slipped and fell on the snow-covered ground. 彼は逃げた。しかしすってんころりんと雪の上に転んでしまった。
すってんてん	少量	flat-broke, stone-broke	He invested all his money in horse racing and has become flat-broke. 彼は有り金すべて競馬につぎ込んですってんてんになってしまった。
すっぽり	つつむ	completely	The skies are completely covered with smog and air pollution is becoming a serious issue in developing countries. 空はすっぽりとスモッグに覆われており、発展途上国において大気汚染は深刻な問題になっている。
ズドン	銃が鳴る	crack	I heard the crack of rifle in a distance last night. 昨夜、遠くでライフル銃のズドンという音が聞こえた。
ずばずば	言う	call a spade a spade; candidly	He speaks candidly to anyone. 彼は誰にでもずばずばものを言う。
ずばり	言う	frankly	Please speak frankly. ずばり言ってくれ。
すべすべ	滑る	be as smooth as silk	"I had a bath with special beauty powder, and my skin is as smooth as silk." 「とっておきの入浴剤を入れたお風呂に入ってお肌すべすべよ。」
すやすや	眠る	sleep soundly	When the burglar broke into a house and found a baby sleeping soundly, he thought of his own child and left the house without stealing anything. 強盗がある家に押し入り、赤ん坊がすやすやと眠っているのを見て、自分の子供を思い出し、何も盗らずに逃げた。
すらすら	快適	with no problem; fluently	Little Sally not only writes down all alphabets with no problem, but also pronounces them fluently. 幼いサリーはアルファベットをすらすら書けるだけでなく、すらすら発音することもできる。
すらり	細い	slim; slender	My mother, who is a little overweight these days, insists that she used to be a slim beauty when young. 最近太り気味の母は若い頃はすらりとした美人だったのよと言い張る。
するする	降りる、上がる	slid down/up	A monkey slid down from the tree and picked up the banana we placed on the ground. サルが木からするすると下りて来て、地面の上に置いたバナナを拾った。
ずるずる	深み	gradually drawn into...	We tried to keep the boy away from bad boys, but he was gradually drawn into the world of crime. その少年を悪いグループから遠ざけようと努力したが、結局ずるずると悪の世界へ入ってしまった。
ずるずるべったり	つきあう	drag out one's relationship	You shouldn't drag out your relationship with him. あんな人とずるずるべったりの関係を続けるのはやめるべきだ。
するり	逃げる	slip out	The moment I caught the boy, he slipped out right under my arm. 捕まえたと思ったとたんに少年はするりと逃げた。
すれすれ	合致	almost...; barely...	As he did last-ditch efforts, he could barely passed the exam. 彼は土壇場で頑張ったのですれすれで試験を合格できた。
ずんぐり	太っている	dumpy; pudgy	Usually dumpy people are gentle and sensitive. ずんぐりしている人はたいてい優しくて繊細だ。
