The National Anthem of New Zealand

1876年に Thomas Bracken の歌詞に付ける曲が一般に募集され、教師である John Joseph Woods の作曲が採用されました。その年のクリスマスの日に初めて歌われ、その後、 George Grey 総督の要請により、1878年に オークランドの裁判官 Thomas H Smith の 翻訳で、最初のマオリ語訳が完成。1940年、建国100周年記念委員会の推薦によって英国の国歌である God Save The Queen がニュージーランドの国歌として宣言されましたが、1977年英国女王の承認により God Defend New Zealand が国歌となりました。現在では God Save The Queen 、 God Defend New Zealand のいずれも「国歌」として公認されています。
