In one ear and out the other
turn a deaf ear

「暖簾に腕押し、糠にくぎ」などと同じような意味。 "like a water off a duck's back" とも言いますし、また聞くべき相手を主体にして "He turned a deaf ear "あるいは "paid no attention to..." と言うこともできます。

はちのすをつついたようになる
蜂の巣をつついたようになる

Stir up a hornet's nest
Bring a hornet's nest about one's ears

"a hornet nest" は「雀蜂の巣」で、「蜜蜂の巣」は "a honeycomb" 、「蜜蜂の巣箱」は "a beehive" といいます。

はなよりだんご
花より団子

Pudding rather than praise.
Dumplings rather than blossoms.

「花を持たせる」のは "let someone have the credit" 、「パーティに花を添える」は "someone added color to the party" 、「花も実もある話」は "The talk is both interesting and instructive." となります。

はやおきはさんもんのとく
早起きは三文の得

The early bird catches the worm.

転じて「早起きをする人」「会合などに定刻より早めに来る人」のことを "an early bird" ともいいます。その他 "bird" を用いた慣用句として "eat like a bird" 「極端に小食の人」、 "a bird's-eye view" 「鳥瞰図」などがあります。

ひさしをかしておもやとられる
庇を貸して母屋取られる

Give him an inch and he takes a mile.

「ちょっと親切にしたらつけこまれる」という意味の格言です。ちなみに「庇」は "eaves" または "a pent roof" 、「母屋」は "the main building" あるいは "the main house" です。

ひとのうわさもしちじゅうごにち
人の噂も七十五日

Nine day's wonder
A wonder lasts but nine (seven) days.

日本語では「75日」なのが英語だと「7日」または「9日」になるのが興味深いですね。 "the lucky seven" や "on cloud nine" （もとは "seven" だったようですが）「天にも昇る心地」という幸せな意味になります。

ひとはみかけによらない
人は見かけによらない

Don't judge the book by its cover.

もちろん A man is not to be judged by his looks (appearance). とも言えます。逆に「見かけ倒し」は "a mere show" 、 "deceptive appearance" などと言います。

ひとをのろわばあなふたつ
人を呪わば穴二つ

Curses, like chickens, come home to roost. He who digs a pit for others fall into it himself.

その他、「人」に関することわざとして、 Don't trust a stranger. 「人を見たら泥棒と思え」、 A man lives but for one generation; his name for many. 「人は一代名は末代」、 Learn wisdom by the follies of others. 「人の振りみて我が振り直せ」などがあります。

火に油を注ぐ

英語も発想的には日本語と同じです。「油」を使った慣用句として、「油を売る」 "loiter (around)" といい、 "burn the midnight oil" 「遅くまで勉強する」、 "oil one's tongue" 「べらべらおべっかを使う」などがあります。

ひのないところにけむりはたたぬ
火のないところに煙は立たぬ

There is no smoke without fire.
No smoke without fire.

脇役の「煙」について見てみましょう。「煙（けむ）に巻く」は "mystify" または "bewilder" 、「あの人は煙たい存在」という場合には "feel uncomfortable in his presence" などと言います。

ひゃくぶんはいっけんにしかず
百聞は一見にしかず

Seeing is believing.

"believe" を使った格言として、 We soon believe what we desire. 「願っていることは信じやすい」などがあります。また "make-believe": 「見せかけ」という意味になります。（例： "make-believe sleep" 「狸寝入り」）

ひやめしをくう
冷や飯を食う

be treated coldly
eat humble pie

良い仕事を与えられずに我慢している状態は "be placed in an unduly low position" などと言えます。また "eat humble pie" のほうは、侮辱や屈辱に耐えて詫びを入れたり、黙って耐えるというニュアンスがあります。

ふくすいぼんにかえらず
覆水盆に返らず

It is no use crying over spilt milk.
Spilt water cannot be gathered again.

上の表現は受験英語にも出てきますし、もっとも見慣れた言い方です。他に、 What is done cannot be undone. 、または Regret always comes after. It is too late to be sorry. などと言うこともできます。

Actions speak louder than words.
Action before words

その他にも "work before talk" 、 "He is a man of deeds, not of words." といった表現もあります。一方「言行一致」している人のことを "He is as good as his word." 、それ以上のことをする人を "He is better than his word" といいます。

ぺんはけんよりつよし
ペンは剣よりも強し

The pen is mightier than the sword.

「武より文が優る」ということを言っていますが、「言葉は剣よりもよく人を切る」 Words cut more than swords. ということわざもあります。

ほんまつてんとう
本末転倒

Don't put the cart before the horse.
mistake the means for the end

「本末」は "cause and effect" または "the means and the end" 、 "the substance and the shadow" など場合に応じていろんな表現が可能です。
