ラテン語の pedester 「歩く」、 ped- 「足の」が語源です。歩行者天国 a pedestrian mall など、「歩行者」という意味でよく使われる言葉ですが、注目したいのはもうひとつの意味。想像力に欠けたような「つまらない」「面白くない」という意味があり、「とりあえずワシがしゃべっとくわ」といった社長さんとかの挨拶や祝辞など、気合の入っていないスピーチなどを表現する場合に使われます。（もちろん、すべてのトップのご挨拶が pedestrian というのではなく、要は「伝えよう」とする熱意がどれだけこもっているかですね。）
