Japanese Food - Warabi Mochi -
Warabi Mochi
わらびもち, 蕨餅
Bracken Starch Dumpling
Some people may fondly remember hearing a travelling vendor calling out his Warabi Mochi as if he were singing. That was a typical sales method of this early summer dessert. It was still a rare item thirty or forty years ago. Nowadays, it has become a fairly popular item and is available in supermarkets and Wagashi (Japanese sweets) shops. Traditionally, the food is made from the root starch of Warabi, combined with glutinous rice. However, due to its complicated production process, authentic Warabi Mochi made with the said ingredients is hard to find. More popularly available types are made of Kuzuko, sweet potato starch, and tapioca. Honey and Kinako are spread over the food when it’s eaten.
