Japanese Food - Zōni -

Zōni

Rice Cake Soup

The Japanese New Year’s Day won’t pass without eating this dish. Called Zō Ni, or “boil miscellaneous ingredients together”, it’s a soup with rice cakes boiled together with various food items. The preparation and seasoning methods vary depending on the region or household. It can be a clear soup with round Mochi (rice cakes), or a Shōyu-based soup with square-shaped Mochi. Some areas or families use Miso to season the soup, or drop baked Mochi instead of boiling it in the soup. The ingredients in the soup also vary: vegetables such as Hakusai, Neghi, carrots, radish, meat, fish fillets, and Kamaboko are popular additions.
