名詞として使われる場合は、人間やモノの attribute という表現で使われ、その人やモノが生まれつき持っている性質や自然に備わっている特徴という意味があります。あるいは、「魔法の杖」は魔法使いの attribute であるなど、特定の性質や性格、パーソナリティ、役割や機能に関連する物・定義付ける物という意味で使われます。

動詞としての意味は、attribute A (= 結果) to B (= 原因) という形で、「成功を運によるものだ」など、何らかの結果や現象を特定の要因・原因・源泉に関連付ける場合に使われますが、tribute 「貢物、贈り物」を連想させることから、主に「～のおかげとみなす」といったプラスの意味に使うことが多く、「～のせいにする」という意味では、impute という単語を使い、どちらでもない中立的な意味合いでは ascribe を使うという考え方もあります。

もう１つの動詞的用法は、作品などを特定の動作主（誰によって作られたか）、場所（どこの産物）か、時代（どの時代に属するか）を表現するときに、attribute A (= 作品など) to B (= 動作主など) という形で表します。
